“The government is good at one thing,” said Harry Browne[1]. “It knows how to break your legs, and then hand you a crutch and say ‘see if it weren’t for the government you wouldn’t be able to walk.’”

Harry Browne would have been saying something else after reading Harold Meyerson’s op-ed column in The Washington Post this week. Maybe, “Now that’s what I’m talking about.”

Meyerson concluded his The job machine grinds to a halt piece with, “Corporations have figured out a way to make money without resuming hiring. Their model is premised on not resuming hiring. If the public sector doesn’t fill the gap, the era of American prosperity is history.”

Hang on! “Corporations have figured out a way to make money” and “the era of American prosperity is history” in the same paragraph? Give me a break!

Here’s the fact: The government is trying to break the legs of business in America but it keeps on figuring out how to walk without crutches. And it’s even carrying an increasingly obese public sector (aka, government jobs) on its back! (Make certain you get the picture: The guy being carried is trying to break the legs of the guy doing the carrying.)

According to the president’s new budget, federal civilian employment in the executive branch will be 15% higher in 2011 than it was in 2007[2]:
